We
are dedicated to
the formal and
informal education of students and the
public in
all aspects of ocean sciences, incorporating research
and conservation
into their lives.
The primary
mission of The Society for Ocean
Sciences is to inform the public of the delicate relationship between
humans and the world's oceans. The Society
aims to instill a deeper understanding of the current issues affecting
our oceans and marine resources.
Ocean
sciences are a unique interplay among
biology, chemistry, geology and physics, and thus form a framework from
which to enhance the entire scope of science education. We seek to
spark the interest of students in science, ocean science in particular.
There is a
pervasive atmosphere of
classroom-based and virtual modes of instruction. For example, video
clips often replace seeing with one’s own eyes.
A passion for
science is borne out of
curiosity and an enthusiasm for exploring the
natural. These attributes can only be gained by involving students in
hands-on experiences. Instruction in the field taps into all the
senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste.
"Study
nature, love
nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you." Frank Lloyd
Wright.
