The Society for Ocean Sciences The Society For Ocean Sciences

Why Choose Us?

While the Society for Ocean Sciences is a recently formed organization, it's staff has many years of experience leading field trips and expeditions throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Carribean. Unlike other organizations leading similar field programs, SOS leaders all have advanced degrees in Marine Science or Environmental Biology.

SOS staff have provided environmental education to students for many years and have been teaching at the college level for some 35 years. Drew Ferrier and Claire Hudson are active research scientists and strong advocates for outdoor education. Together, they have a wealth of experience leading educational and research based field experiences for students and teachers both locally and abroad.

Mid Atlantic Field Trips

For over a decade, SOS staff have led field trips to Wallops Island, along the Virginia coat line and the Chesapeake Bay. These field trips have proven to be wonderful teaching experiences, ones that change a students perception of science and their place in the environment. On such trips, students have the opportunity to participate in field research aboard scientific vessels, skipjacks and fishing boats. Over the years, students carried out a series of activities ranging from seining to tagging organisms.

Carribean Field Expeditions

Since 1996 SOS staff have provided the opportunity for students and teachers to participate in field expeditions to the Bahamas. Participants were introduced to the unique marine environment, spending much of the day snorkeling or diving in these tropical waters. Many expeditions have a research component, allowing students the rare opportunity to get involved in science. There is no better way to engage students in marine science than having them live, breath and dream of the ocean!

South Florida Expeditions

In 2001 Drew Ferrier designed and implemented an extensive traveling, field expedition throughout the South Florida watershed. Students spend up to 2 weeks traveling from Lake Okeechobee, through Everglades National Park and to the Florida Keys. Along the way, students learn tropical natural history and the myriad of environmental issues currently confronting this fragile watershed.

Cost

We work with you to create a custom field trip (1-2 days) or expedition (2-8 days) to suit your educational needs and budget. We are extremely competitive with other organizations offering these types of experiences and we pride ourselves on the scientific quality our expeditions and field trips provide.
